Fall risk and nutrional status. What
is the connection? It’s pretty simple when you think about it. Poor nutrition leads to muscle and
weight loss. OrthoIllinois Chiropractic carefully assesses our
older McHenry chiropractic patients at risk for falls, paying
special attention to their nutritional status. OrthoIllinois Chiropractic cares about fall prevention!
NUTRITIONAL STATUS BEFORE FALLS
Researchers tried to describe
the association between nutritional status and body mass
index (BMI) and fall risk and recurrent fall risk in older adults
who live in community settings. They found that
malnourished patients and those at risk for malnourishment had
a 45% higher risk of experiencing at least one fall. (1)
Verifying BMI and nutritional status is relatively
easy to do. OrthoIllinois Chiropractic does it to safeguard
our McHenry chiropractic patients!
McHenry FALL RISK AND MALNUTRITION
Fall risk assessments have often disregarded
nutritional status instead concentrating on issues like balance
and fall risk-increasing drugs.
Nutritional status is influential,
too. Malnutrition leads to weight loss which leads to
muscle weakness which leads to an increase in fall risk. It is truly
a ripple effect! A recent study reported
that malnutrition was significantly associated with high fall risk
according to several leading fall risk assessment
tools (especially the Johns Hopkins fall risk assessment
tool). (2) Preventing falls is optimal. Recovering from falls is important.
NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND RECOVERY AFTER FALLS
Low nutritional status in older adults notably
in those who have a history of falling puts them at risk of inferior recovery from a fall.
Almost a third of community-dwelling adults with a fall history were either currently malnourished or at risk of
malnourishment. Improving the nutritional status of those who experienced
a fall improved their physical
performance. (3) OrthoIllinois Chiropractic knows nutrition and is ready
to help our at-risk patients correct theirs!
