McHenry Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk Of Cognitive Decline, Osteoporosis & Fracture Risk

At the mention of the Mediterranean, what comes to mind? Postcard-worthy images of beautiful blue ocean waters, sandy beaches, cloudless blue skies…and food? Yes, food! OrthoIllinois Chiropractic shares nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is talked up around the nutrition world for its many health advantages as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are good for all of us in this McHenry chiropractic family!

BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET

With the expanding recognition that diet plays a valuable role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being developed. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines recommended a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein sufficient enough to preserve normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a reduced risk of fracture. (1) In other studies, the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture risk. Another recent paper states that there is indication that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip fracture risk in addition to threat of lumbar spine osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just published this past month pointed out that older adults who followed the Meditterranean Diet closely had reduced chances of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced osteoporosis odds, decreased risk of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be motivating to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? OrthoIllinois Chiropractic finds these new studies interesting enough to share with our McHenry chiropractic patients and their families.

WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?

What foods are in the mediterranean diet? Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It proposes avoiding sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not easy!
