WHO SMOKES?
Researchers are curious about factors
linked to smoking. In a review of 7547 patients who went
through back surgery, they discovered
that 18% were smokers. The researchers noted that compared to the non-smokers, the smokers were younger, male,
nondiabetic, and nonobese. Patients in this group who suffer
with coronary artery disease were more liable to be
smokers. Smokers who underwent lumbar spine back surgery presented
initially more with leg pain than
back pain and disability. Their employment, insurance/uninsured, and education
status were also related to smoking status. Interestingly
though, smoking status didn’t affect the
disability status one year after back surgery. (1) Modifying
such risk factors work equally well for smokers and nonsmokers
luckily. OrthoIllinois Chiropractic would encourage a McHenry
smoker dealing with McHenry back pain to stop smoking.
SMOKING’S EFFECTS ON THE BODY
The body gets what is good for it…and what’s not. Smoking is not. Studying 2307
smokers and non-smokers, researchers discovered that smoking is most
strongly associated with spine pain. Headache,
trunk pain and limb pain ensued. Active smoking is linked to pain in every part of the body. The spine and head withstand
the force of the painful effect though. If a smoker
does not like pain, you will want to think
about stop smoking! (2) OrthoIllinois Chiropractic is with you to back
your effort to quit smoking when you’re
ready.
