McHenry Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

What do stiff, popping, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! McHenry knee pain sufferers know that morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that comes with getting up and moving. OrthoIllinois Chiropractic hears our McHenry chiropractic patients describe this all the time. Those McHenry knee pain sufferers would be grateful for some relief. What’s one way to get some relief? The Mediterranean diet that involves, of all things, eating. OrthoIllinois Chiropractic asks “How hard can eating be for McHenry knee pain relief?”

McHenry OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

McHenry knee osteoarthritis is common. There are numerous McHenry knee pain sufferers. They’re not alone! 240 million people around the world live with osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any McHenry knee osteoarthritis sufferer can describe the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that reduces the quality of daily life. (1) It is just not much fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be some fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet incorporates plenty of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet permits moderate consumption of dairy, poultry and eggs in addition to red wine and olive oil as the central source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Eating a Mediterranean diet can be very tasty and exciting for a new Mediterranean diet follower.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation as well as pain. A review of three research reports points out that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation due to osteoarthritis fell in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Particularly, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who better followed a Mediterranean diet have lowered risk of deteriorating knee pain at four years follow up. For those who didn’t have knee osteoarthritis at the start of the 4 years project and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% reduced risk of acquiring knee osteoarthritis was found. (3) Overall, a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better quality of life and decreased pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
